About Chiropractic

The word "Chiropractic" means 'done by hand' in ancient Greek. Chiropractors manually adjust the vertebrae of the spine and other joints to relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the spine, joints and supporting structures of the body. Chiropractors are also specialists in prescribing remedial exercise, recommending rehabilitation, injury prevention methods and providing nutritional counselling.

How does an adjustment work?

An adjustment is a skillful, precise movement to a joint in the body. An adjustment optimizes function by returning motion to the joint. When the adjustment occurs, a gas bubble causes the “popping noise” you sometimes hear. Extensive research has been done on chiropractic adjusting techniques. Complications are rare and side-effects, like temporary soreness, are usually minor. Chiropractors are well trained to assess whether your problem will respond to Chiropractic care or if you require treatment from another health care provider.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is broadly recognized as a sound, safe, drug-free, non-invasive therapy for various aches, pains and injuries. Chiropractic has a tremendous safety record. Of course no health treatment is completely free of potential side-effects. Even common medicines carry a risk. Some patients feel immediate relief after an adjustment. A few patients may experience temporary stiffness or slight swelling. However, side effects associated with spinal adjustment are typically minor and brief.  Risks are considerably lower than the serious adverse complications connected to long-term use of non-prescription pain relievers or birth control pills. No serious complication has occurred in more than 73 controlled clinical trials to date. Dr Brunton is happy to speak to you about alternatives to adjustments if requested.

What health problems can be treated by Chiropractic?

Some of the most common reasons why more than 4 million Canadians visit a chiropractor each year:

  • Back Pain

  • Sciatica

  • Neck Pain

  • Rib Pain

  • Headaches

  • Whiplash & Motor Vehicle Accident related injuries

  • Shoulder and Knee Injuries

  • Strains and Sprains from everyday activities

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries

What can I expect on my first visit to Norfolk Health Centre?

On your first visit you will be asked to fill out a few forms, before your assessment and treatment. Arriving 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment is recommended. Dr Brunton will take a detailed history and discuss your primary concern. This information will be used to conduct a physical exam of the area in concern and a motion palpation assessment of the spine. X-Rays are only taken if they are clinically necessary, and this is rare. Dr Brunton will then arrive at a diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan with you. He will clearly outline a prognosis, expectations of treatment frequency and duration as well as various care options pertaining to your specific condition.
